| SET-UP TIME: One
and a half hours.
SHOW LENGTH: Between 75 - 90 minutes.
SESSION TIMES: For primary schools and intermediates
I suggest
11.00am if only one session,
9.00am and 11.00am if two sessions
9, 11 and 1 or 1.30pm if three sessions are required.
For high schools, timetabling would have to be taken
into account, but 9.00, 11.00 and 1.15 seem to be suitable options for
most.
VENUES A hall or gym is preferred.
SEATING: Rather than work in a rectangular hall,
the normal performing way longitudinally with the performer at the stage
end; I like to work sideways. That means I set up along the windows at
the long side, with the audience in a wide semicircle around me. That way,
more can see me, I can work at floor level and it is easier to move amongst
them. Also, it breaks the expectancy the pupils have about halls being
places of entertainment; making it more conducive for them to think. That's
the theory, anyway!
KEY: If at all possible, I like to borrow a key
to the performing area for the day, so I can lock up when I go to the staffroom
at interval. Othrerwise, I find that children through natural curiosity
do want to come and handle my equipment, which I cannot allow when I'm
not there for obvious reasons, the least of which are that I use some chemicals,
sharp things and valuable electronics.
COST: I charge $2.50 per attendee. There is a minimum
of $280 per session (for less than 112) GST is included, which means schools
can make money on my visit when they reclaim GST.. Teachers, parents and
toddlers are free.
RESOURCES: I leave several books to be used as
hands-on follow-up activities. They are photocopyable, but not, naturally,
for commercial gain.
RE SENDING A NOTE TO PARENTS: If schools have no
time to make up one, I already have a made-up note that may be used as
your photocopyable master to be sent to parents, informing them of the
show and requiring them to send along the money. You can download it
